Allergy Testing | Harley Street Medical
We provide allergy testing at our Harley Street Medical. Allergies are widespread and are a response to a substance that would normally be harmless. Depending on the substance and how your body reacts it may produce a mild to a severe reaction. We can provide you with an allergy test, which will provide you with answers for a more comfortable living.
Do I have a food intolerance or an allergy?
Food intolerances are not life threatening, your symptoms can sometimes make you feel very unwell rather than having a severe allergic reaction. It can make you feel very groggy, may affect your work and social life. Your reactions may be delayed or will take a few day’s to appear. The common effects are generally to do with the gut, if any of these symptoms are what you are experiencing you can discuss this with the team today.
Food intolerances are harder to diagnose, as the IgE test will not show, what food or substance you are intolerant to. You can speak to one of our GP’s to help you understand your intolerance further.
What symptoms could I have with Allergies?
Depending on your allergy, will depend on your symptoms. Your symptoms can either appear after the intake immediately or shortly afterwards.
Your symptoms may include but not limited too:
- Coughing/ Breathing difficulties
- Rhinitis, sneezing and inflamed nose
- Itching and burning of the eyes
- Skin rashes
- Swelling of the eyes, mouth or throat
- Gastrointestinal problems such as diarrhoea and constipation
You can speak to one of our dedicated team to discuss any of the symptoms ahead of your blood test with us. However, it is important that if you are experiencing any intense breathing difficulties you must ring 999.
What is an allergy?
Allergies are very common in our society and involves the body’s immune system. When you have a virus, or bacteria that enters your body your immune system works to fight it off. However, if you have an allergy, your immune system treats this harmless substance, like dust or pollen, as a threat. To fight this perceived threat, your immune system makes antibodies called immunoglobulin E (IgE).With having a blood test with us we will test to help pinpoint exactly which protein in the ‘’ which causes a reaction. By understanding what protein creates this reaction, our team will be able to access any lifestyle choices that will need to managed, to ensure that a more severe reaction will not occur.
What is invloved with an allergy test?
This is a comprehensive blood test that we deliver; the appointment should take no longer than 10 minutes for the draw itself. One of our team will book you in to see our phlebotomists at either one of our locations or for an extra charge home visit. You do not need to speak to one of our clinically trained team before your blood test if you know what test you would like to be tested for. If you would like this to be investigated, we will be able to book an appointment either by phone or face-to-face appointment with our GP team ahead of the blood draw.
Your results will come back directly to you or we can organise an appointment with the team to go through your results.
