Your kidneys play a vital role in keeping your body functioning including the removal of waste products, releasing hormones to regulate blood pressure and controlling the production of red blood cells. A healthy kidney function is vital to your overall health and wellbeing. A healthy kidney function is crucial for detoxifying the body, maintaining proper hydration, and ensuring optimal performance of various bodily systems.
Common Components Of A Kidney Function Test Include
A kidney function blood test is a very important test used to assess how well the kidneys are working. It helps detect kidney problems, including kidney disease, and monitor their progression. The key components of this test are
Creatinine is a waste product produced by muscles from the breakdown of creatine, a compound that helps produce energy for muscle contractions. Normally, creatinine is filtered out of the blood by the kidneys and excreted in urine. Why it’s measured: Elevated creatinine levels in the blood can indicate that the kidneys are not functioning properly.
BUN is another waste product produced by the body from the breakdown of protein. Like creatinine, it is filtered out by the kidneys.
Why it’s measured: High BUN levels can indicate poor kidney function or dehydration. However, other factors (e.g., high protein intake, liver disease) can also influence BUN levels.
eGFR is a calculated value that reflects how well the kidneys are filtering blood. It’s estimated using the creatinine level, age, sex, and race of the person.
Why it’s measured: A low eGFR indicates reduced kidney function and may suggest kidney disease. A normal eGFR is typically above 90 mL/min/1.73m², though values may vary slightly depending on the lab.
Electrolytes are minerals in your blood that help maintain the body’s fluid balance, nerve function, and muscle function. Why it’s measured: Abnormal levels can indicate kidney issues since the kidneys help regulate electrolyte balance.
Albumin is a protein that is normally found in the blood.
Why it’s measured: If kidney function is impaired, albumin may leak into the urine. An elevated albumin level in the blood could indicate kidney damage or disease.
When the test is done:
A kidney function blood test may be ordered if you have symptoms of kidney disease (e.g., fatigue, swelling, changes in urine), a history of kidney problems, high blood pressure, diabetes, or other conditions that affect kidney health. It is also done as a general health check review and if you are feeling unwell.
Abnormal results often require further testing or a consultation with our private GP For diagnosis and treatment options.
