The liver is responsible for many of the body’s essential functions such as regulating blood sugar levels, fighting infections and detoxifying your blood. Good liver function is vital to your overall health and wellbeing.
A liver function test (LFT), also known as liver panel, is a group of blood tests that help evaluate the function of your liver, detect liver damage, and monitor the progression of liver diseases. These tests measure the levels of various enzymes, proteins, and substances produced or processed by the liver.
Common components of a liver function test include
ALT is an enzyme found primarily in the liver. Elevated levels may indicate liver damage, as ALT is released into the bloodstream when liver cells are damaged.
AST is an enzyme found in the liver, heart, muscles, and other tissues. High levels of AST may indicate liver injury, but it can also point to problems in other organs.
ALP is an enzyme found in the liver, bones, kidneys, and bile ducts. Elevated levels may indicate liver disease, bile duct obstruction, or bone disorders.
Bilirubin is a waste product produced when the liver breaks down red blood cells. High levels of bilirubin in the blood may lead to jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes) and could indicate liver dysfunction or bile duct obstruction.
This measures the amount of bilirubin that has been processed by the liver and is water-soluble. Elevated levels can indicate liver or bile duct issues.
Albumin is a protein produced by the liver. It helps maintain the volume of blood in the circulatory system. Low levels of albumin can indicate liver disease, kidney disease, or malnutrition.
This measures the total amount of albumin and other proteins in the blood. Low total protein levels may suggest liver or kidney disease.
GGT is an enzyme found in the liver, kidneys, and pancreas. High levels are typically associated with liver disease or bile duct problems, and may also indicate alcohol use or certain medications.
Why is this test done
Liver disease diagnosis: To diagnose liver conditions like hepatitis, cirrhosis, or fatty liver disease.
Monitoring treatment: To assess how well treatments are working for liver conditions.
Evaluating liver damage: To detect liver damage due to drugs, alcohol, or other toxins.
Note: All test results are provided with a full report and guidance with the opportunity to speak to a practitioner or arrange an appointment with one of our GP’s on the same day or as soon as possible.
